Plaster Casting

For this activity we had to go to the beach and get a cast of either our arm, hand, leg or anything we wanted. I have never done a plaster casting so I really liked this activity. I also really loved it because we got to go to the beach. I absolutely love the beach. Although I didn’t get to go during class time I went with my boyfriend and went to Huntington Beach because I live there so it was close. Unfortunately, my plaster casting of my hand didn’t work out so well. I think i might of took it out too early because it broke, but I would defiantly try it out again. huntington-beach-california-5806_1 20140319-121243

Avatar

For this weeks activity I had to create an avatar and explore the second life. While exploring I couldn’t believe how cool it was I have never been on a second life before and seeing CSULB in virtual form was probably the coolest thing ever. After exploring the realm I had to interview an artist while exploring I found this cool area with a bunch of pictures hanging in a dome and colorful lights. That is where I found the artist Vanessa Baylock. Vanessa is actually the creator of the dome with all the lights and pictures. I thought that it was so extraordinary! She also stated how most people need to have their art in galleries and museum in order to full successful, however Vanessa goes against this norm stating that what ever you do in the world is good and you don’t need to back up your work. As long as your happy with your work thats all the matters. Overall, I thought this activity was really interesting and different I liked how out of the box it was.

Counter Factual Identity: life as a boy

For this activity we had to create counter factual identities and act like someone I’m not, so I thought why not dress up as a guy! I picked to dress up as a guy because I thought that it was the most counter factual identity I could have since I am a girl. So I went through my dads closet and found anything thing that would slightly fit. I even used eyeshadow to make myself a fake beard and tried to talk in a deep voice. When approaching people I felt like a lot of them thought I was really strange or on drugs. However after asking them questions I informed them that this was a class project and that I wasn’t trying to be strange or creepy.  When I asked them what the thought my name was I got a variety of answers like, “Susan, Vicky, Donna, Judy, Brenda.” It seemed like the majority of the names they said where somewhat masculine. The answer that shocked me the most was that almost all the people I asked about my major said that they thought I was a Women’s Gender Major. This irritated me because they assumed that I was hardcore feminist who burns my bra and probably never shaves and that I was a Lesbian. (stereotype of a feminist) It was really sad to know that society instantly judges you and puts you into categories simply by the way you dress.IMG_1057_2

Artist #6: Catherine Vu

Catherine is 24 years old and is a 4th year at CSULB. She is vietnamese and is a photography major. For her art work she took a picture of what she wore and ate that day. Catherine said that she spent 3 months of taking picture and claimed that her project changed over time. She stated that certain memories triggered certain parts of her work. Catherine’s inspiration for her work was social media such as Instagram. Her hobbies are searching and browsing throughout the internet. Overall, Catherine work spanned a year but she only took photos for the first three months and she stated that she wanted to add more photos and do more things but her photos and project changed and evolved over time and she liked that it did change because you can’t plan out your art it just has to happen with life. One thing I personally was upset about was that she seemed like she didn’t care to answer some of my and fellow classmates questions. Even when she did answer she would ask another question for the question and get mad if you didn’t know the answer.

Corpse

For this activity I had to take a photo of me as a corpse. I decided that the reason for my death would be because I fell down a flight of stairs. My house is on the top story so I constantly have to run up and down the stairs to get in or out. Almost every time I’m in a rush I have a near death experience. So when given this project I knew that falling down the stair would be perfect since it almost happened to me. I tell myself every time to not rush cause one of these days I really might end up slipping and falling. I think this corpse picture gave me that realization so now I take my sweet time.IMG_5807
